The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) would like to congratulate Jessica Pitchford of the Special Assignment team, South African Broadcasting Cooporation (SABC) and Pilirani Phiri of Zodiak Radio in Malawi for winning the MISA John Manyarara Investigative Journalist of the Year Award and the MISA John Manyarara Upcoming Investigative Journalist of the Year for 2007 respectively. Press Statement on the Launch of the MISA John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award

The Media Institute of Southern Africa recognises the importance of investigative journalism as a field of journalism which is essential to the consolidation of democracy in southern Africa . To further encourage the practice of investigative journalism in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), on World Press Freedom Day 2001, MISA inaugurate the John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award. Named after the MISA Trust Fund Board (TFB) founding chairperson Judge John Olivier Manyarara, the award seeks to recognise and reward excellence in investigative journalism in the SADC region. In 2006, the John Manyarara Investigative Journalism Award was awarded jointly to Mabvuto Banda of Nation Publications in Malawi and Stefaans Brummer, Sam Sole, Wisani Wa Ngobeni of Mail and Guardian in South Africa. Read more
