Swaziland: Government opens up the airwaves

The government of Swaziland has called for people and organisations to apply
for community and commercial radio licences. The call for licenses was made
by the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation. Read more
Namibia: Communications policy being developed

Work has started to develop a broadcasting, telecommunications and ICT
policy for Namibia. The Namibian government has engaged a South African
consultancy to report and make recommendations on the policy following a
public tender. Read more


Zambia: Good governance project for community radio stations continues

MISA Zambia has received K5.2 billion in funding from Development Cooperation of Ireland (DCI) for the Radio Good Governance Project. Read more


Zambia: MISA in partnership to assist community radio stations with equipment

MISA Zambia has entered into a partnership with a Swedish Christian
development organisation Diakonia, to assist community radio stations
purchase equipment.

South Africa: SABC boss Mpofu splits board

The opposing forces in the SABC boardroom battle became clearer this week:
CEO Dali Mpofu is up against board chairperson Khanyi Mkonza and her deputy Christine Qunta, who want him axed, while his supporters include businessman Peter Vundla, President Thabo Mbeki’s former spokesperson Bheki Khumalo and electoral commission chief Pansy Tlakula.Read more



South Africa: Mbeki's SABC quartet must go, say ANC, Cosatu

The ANC in Parliament, backed by a civil society initiative that includes Cosatu, wants four of President Thabo Mbeki's appointees to the SABC board to step down. They are lawyer Christine Qunta and businesspersons Peter Vundla, Gloria Serobe and Andile Mbeki. Read more
Malawi: Malawi Broadcasting Corporation won't air poll results

The Malawi Electoral Commission plans to establish a media results elections centre as part of its strategy to ensure the 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections are transparent, free and fair. Read more
South Africa: Government says digital migration on track

The South African government has responded to media reports criticising the
finalisation of a policy framework for the digitisation of broadcasting, assuring that things are on track.Read more

Namibia: Mweb Launches Vsat Broadband

MWEB Namibia has launched its VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology, bringing Namibia into the ranks of more technologically advanced
nations. VSAT, using satellite technology, enables users to access the Internet 24/7 from any part of the country at high speeds and for a flat rate.
