South Africa: Save our SABC campaign continues
 
The Save our SABC: Reclaiming our Public Broadcaster Coalition in conjunction with WITS University, on November 10 hosted a debate entitled “Is the SABC becoming a state broadcaster?”. Read more

South Africa: MISA concerned with intimidation of SABC journalists

The South African chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa has expressed concern over allegations that SABC journalists and especially the editorial team is being intimidated by political parties as South Africa prepares for the 2009 general elections. Read more

Botswana: Phone-in programme stopped on management instructions

The presenter of Radio Botswana’s morning show programme, Masa-a-Sele, was forced to cancel the show’s phone-in segment on November 17, on instructions from the Director of Broadcasting Services, Mogomotsi Kaboeamodimo. The phone in segment on that day was to discuss the recalling of a ruling party Member of Parliament, Mr Pono Moatlhodi. Read more

Zambia: Radio station manager arrested

The Station Manager of the Catholic Owned Radio Icengelo in Kitwe, Fr. Frank Bwalya, was arrested by police on November 12 in connection with a live post election radio programme that has been running on the station for two weeks.

Zambia: MISA dismayed by station manager’s arrest

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia on November 13 expressed dismay at the arrest of Radio Icengelo Station Manager Fr. Frank Bwalya by the police in Kitwe. Read more

Zambia: Police drop charges against station manager
On November 26 Zambian police dropped charges against Radio Icengelo station manager, Fr. Frank Bwalya, citing security reasons. Fr. Bwalya was due to appear at the Kitwe magistrate court on November 27 to answer charges of broadcasting information intended to cause divisions in communities. Read more

Malawi: Joy Radio shut down again

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on November 20 shut down Joy Radio for the second time in two months after the High Court in Blantyre lifted an injunction the radio station obtained on October 17. Read more

Malawi: Joy Radio appeals to Supreme Court over revoked license

Joy FM on November 24 appealed to the Supreme Court to reverse the High Court ruling that resulted in the station being shut down on November 20. Read more

Malawi: Police stop radio listeners’ march

On November 26 Malawi police stopped a march by concerned listeners of Joy Radio who wanted to deliver a petition to the district commissioner to have the radio back on air. Read more

Zimbabwe: MISA concerned about state of telecommunications sector

MISA Zimbabwe says it is concerned about the appalling state of fixed and mobile telephone networks in Zimbabwe. Read more

Malawi: Parliament to have radio station

The Malawi National Assembly is planning to set up its own radio station so that parliamentary proceedings are broadcast live. The development is part of Parliament’s reform programme aimed at “Taking Parliament Closer to the People” which is being funded by the British donor agency, DFID. Read more

Malawi: MACRA rolls out rural telecommunications

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says it is set to provide telephone and internet services to eight of the country’s least developed districts. Read more

Mozambique: Massive increase in teledensity

Mozambique’s teledensity (the number of telephone subscribers per 100 inhabitants) has jumped from 3.39 in 2004 to 20.6 in 2008, according to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Paulo Zucula. Read more

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

This year the Media Institute of Southern Africa, (MISA) carried out various advocacy interventions under its Campaign for Broadcasting Diversity. A regional overview of the community broadcasting landscape shows that community broadcasters continue to struggle with the problem of sustainability, with regard to finance, human resources and broadcasting equipment.
