MISA calls for the release of Jestina Mukoko
The Media Institute of Southern Africa has expressed deep concern
and shock over the abduction of Zimbabwean broadcaster and civic
leader Jestina Mukoko who was abducted from her home on December
3.
|
| In
a statement on December 8, the MISA Regional Secretariat in Windhoek
said the abduction of Mukoko demonstrates the extent of the break
down of law and order in Zimbabwe and the levels of impunity that
are tolerated by the regime. “Mukoko and citizens of Zimbabwe
have lost all protection under the law and are subjected to any
form of repression willy-nilly, “ the statement said.
MISA called upon the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
to take immediate action to protect the citizens of Zimbabwe and
demand the immediate release of Mukoko. “The act of abducting
Mukoko and many other people who remain unaccounted for is a desperate
political act and cowardice on the part of those who perpetrate
these acts, and on the part of the government of Zimbabwe,” MISA
said.
It further urged the United Nations and the African Union to take
the matter of Mukoko up with the Zimbabwe government and to deal
with the crisis in Zimbabwe. “The world has watched the tragedy
in Zimbabwe unfold and it is time for action to be taken to resolve
this matter once and for all.”, MISA said.
On January 30 a High Court judge postponed the hearing of a bail
application by Mukoko saying the defence should first file a written
response on issues raised by the state against her quest to be
granted bail.
