Don’t be campaign managers - Zambian media urged

The Media Council of Zambia (MECOZ) executive secretary Benwell Mwale has urged the media in Zambia to be neutral and play an informative role during elections as opposed to being campaign managers for political parties.Mwale was quoted in the National Mirror of 5 November 2008 commenting on the media coverage in the just ended presidential by-election.

He said that the language used in some of the print media was unfair. He however commended some sections of the media that he said had been fair in their coverage of the by-election.

He said that coverage of the community radio was generally objective and brought out much needed information to the electorate in the rural communities. However, Mwale said that the public media still presented news in a biased manner with the ruling party receiving priority in news coverage.

Background
The just ended presidential elections were tightly contested and the government funded state owned media and the main private media were seriously polarized. This has caused a general outcry from the public, government and opposition political parties.
