Expect Media policy soon, Minister tells MISA-Lesotho

On 11 October 2008, the Lesotho Minister of Communications Science and Technology Mothejoa Metsing addressed MISA-Lesotho strategic planning meeting stating he was ready to pass the Lesotho Media policy.

Metsing said he had his, “sleeves rolled up for the passing of the media policy”, adding his ministry is still waiting for the consultants to bring back the draft document that would be merged with the one that was developed by MISA-Lesotho.

The policy has remained stagnant in the Ministry offices since it was referred back to the stakeholders by the Lesotho cabinet in 2006. It later emerged that there were two versions of the policy; the one that was reviewed by stakeholders in a forum hosted by MISA-Lesotho and the one developed by the Ministry.

The minister has promised to bring back the draft document to the stakeholders for review before it is taken to cabinet for the second time. He promised that it is a matter of months before it is in place. MISA-Lesotho has been pushing for the adoption of a national media policy which would be used a framework to develop the media, especially guaranteeing media freedom and developing the broadcast and telecommunication sector.
