MISA-Namibia Board confers with Minister of Information
and Communication Technology on media policy in Namibia
The National Governing Council (NGC) of the Namibian Chapter
of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, (MISA Namibia), on
21 November, paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Information
and Communication Technology, Joel Kaapanda. The main aim of
the visit was for the Board members to be introduced to the Minister,
as well as for the Board to enquire and to be updated on the
progress made on the drafting of the Access to Information process,
by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The meeting was also geared at soliciting support
for community radio, as well as to engage the Minister in discussion
on the Communication Bill and concerns contained therein.
On his part, Joel Kaapanda, acknowledged that there is a need
for continued communication and cooperation between MISA Namibia
and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.
Meanwhile, MISA Namibia Chairperson, Sandra Williams regarded
the visit as very progressive. Williams used the opportunity
to highlight that when the media and MISA Namibia raised concerns,
on issues concerning the media, it should not been viewed as
criticism.
MISA-Namibia also discussed issues of Self-Regulation in the
media with a view of soliciting government support. The meeting
was attended by Regional Director of MISA, Kaitira Kandjii, MISA
Namibia National Director Mathew Haikali, Chairperson of MISA
Namibia, Sandra Williams, and fellow board members, Jata Kazondu,
Frederico Links, Florence Haifeni and Gladwin Groenewaldt.
