MISA Namibia commends editors on progress made on media self regulation in Namibia

The Namibian chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, MISA Namibia, commends the Namibian Editors Forum (NEF), for putting in place mechanism for self governing and self regulation of the media. This is done in order to promote ethical reporting, bring integrity and transparency to the media industry.

An illustration of how a media self-regulatory grievance procedure would work, was presented by the Director of the Legal Assistance Center, Norman Tjombe, at the NEF’s first Annual General Meeting, held in Windhoek on 24 November. This decision was accepted by all NEF members present at the meeting.

NEF members consist of various editors and news managers from different media houses.

National Director of MISA Namibia, Mathew Haikali says he is pleased with the process and the progress made on the self regulation of the media and look forward to all stake holders coming on board to support the process.

In addition the NEF expressed shock and concern with the Draft Communication Bill, and that it would, as is stands now, give "government free rein to monitor telephone calls and electronic mail in the name of crime prevention."

The NEF plans to have a press conference tomorrow (26 November) where they will announce their position on the Communication Bill. The NEF also frowned on journalists taking freebies from news makers and has placed this matter on their list of important issues to deliberate on in future.

Meanwhile, also on the agenda yesterday was the role of the NEF in the upcoming elections.

With regard this, says Haikali: "The NEF should be pro-active in civic education, especially with special attention on the upcoming elections in 2009. They should teach people on the election process, the difference between issues and personalities, and how to make informed, educated decisions when voting.
