MoAfrika newspaper attacks MISA-Lesotho and UNESCO

On 28 November 2008, Lesotho’s local newspaper MoAfrika, attacked and remonstrated against MISA-Lesotho and UNESCO’s initiative to set up a radio station in Mafeteng, a district 93km from the capital, Maseru. In its issue volume 17 No.48 of November 28 2008, MoAfrika opined in the editorial comment that MISA-Lesotho and UNESCO, by setting up a radio station in Mafeteng were helping the opposition in that constituency which was won by now the deputy Prime Minister Lesao Lehohla.

he paper remonstrates that MoAfrika FM, a private sister radio station of the paper, is already doing the community broadcasting. Mafeteng has access to only two radio stations in the country; state owned Radio Lesotho and the self same MoAfrika FM which has publicly pronounced its support for the ruling party and present government.

The paper says the community radio station seeks to “kunyula bo-Morgan Tsvangirai ba Lesotho nako e sa le teng” (Loosely translated: to assist the Morgan Tsvangirais of Lesotho to campaign for the next election).

This follows widespread story that MISA Lesotho and UNESCO are planning to set up a radio station in Mafeteng.  This would be the first community radio station in Lesotho. All other radio stations are based in Maseru and do not adequately address relevant community issues of many areas in the country as all private radio stations broadcast only 50km radius.

UNESCO and MISA Lesotho held a training workshop for core groups on Community Multimedia Centre (CMC) in the Mafeteng district on 3-7 November 2008. This followed a feasibility study undertaken by the two organizations in July 2008. This would be the first radio station to be owned and managed by the community in Lesotho. It is expected the radio station will operate before the end of 2009.
