Uganda gets independent media council

UGANDA has finally joined Kenya, Tanzania and 25 other countries that have an independent self-regulatory council of the media.
The Independent Media Council of Uganda was launched on Friday at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala by the chairperson of the governing board, former prime minister, Kintu Musoke. Read more

The council is aimed at promoting ethics among journalists and handling
public complaints against the media.

The council, made of 13 members, comprises media practitioners, an advocate,
academics and civil society. The New Vision news editor, John Kakande, is a member.

Uganda has a statutory media council. Musoke described the launch as 'historic'. Readers, listeners and viewers, he said, should utilise the mechanism since it is faster at resolving complaints compared to the courts that have a backlog of cases.

He added: "It provides an avenue for the public to check on the excesses of the media and to hold accountable those who hold others accountable."
