New newspaper launched

The first “black-owned and black-initiated” bi-weekly newspaper, The Villager, was launched on Thursday 16 June 2011 by President Hifikepunye Pohamba.

According to reports by the Namibian on the 20th June 2011, the newspaper is an initiative of publisher, John Walenga of Omalaeti Productions, with the intention to “fill the gap by becoming the definitive and impartial news media”, by “complementing the policy of indigenisation and empowerment”.

Walenga said the agenda of The Villager is to “track down” the role of Targeted Investment Programme for Employment and Economic Growth (TIPEEG) through which Government intends to create jobs for particularly the youth, and the manifestation of Namibia’s development plan, Vision 2030.

He said coverage would entail 60 to 70 per cent business and finance, with a further 20 per cent covering social and political issues, with sport and entertainment comprising 10 per cent of coverage.

Walenga said The Villager has already created 17 permanent jobs “with hundreds to be created downstream through sales”. The newspaper hit the street on 17 June 2011. //End//
