An Afternoon Newspaper Launched
The Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL) on 27 August 2009 announced the launch of the first ever afternoon newspaper in the country. Known as The Weekend Times, the paper hit the streets on Friday 28 August 2009, and has been designed to complement weekend reading with a difference. The paper adds to BNL’s existing three sister papers The Daily Times, Malawi News and The Sunday Times.

Announcing the news at a conference at the company’s premises in Blantyre, Leonard Chikadya, Managing Director for Blantyre Print and Publishing Limited (BP&P), described the development as one of the rare times when media make news.
“As a leader, BNL introduced the country’s first daily, The Daily Times over 114 years ago. 50 years ago, the company introduced the first Saturday paper, Malawi News. Five years ago, the company introduced the first Sunday paper, The Sunday Times. What other attributes would we look for in a good leader?” he queried.
According to Chikadya, The Weekend Times will be dedicated to sports, leisure, entertainment and culture, filling a gap in the market by targeting the trendy and the outgoing. The launch is double celebration as the company is also rebranding Malawi News to mark the 50th anniversary. BNL was established in 1895.
