Catholic TV To Beam Local Soap

Luntha Television, a Catholic Television Broadcaster has put a smile on viewers following news that the broadcaster is set to start beaming a local TV Soap ‘Tikuferanji’. TV Luntha signed a pact on 9 September 2009 with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) - a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church development arm - to beam the soap.

‘Tikuferanji’ meaning ‘why are we dying,’ is also beamed on state-controlled Television Malawi (TVM) and is directed by Michael Ussi, a celebrated comedian and actor.

Speaking to The Nation Newspaper, Luntha Deputy Director Rev. Fr. Andrew Kaufa said beaming the soap, which tackles the multi-prolonged aspects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, was within their line of entertaining, educating and informing Malawians. “As soap, Tikuferanji is entertaining as well as educative. It is a powerful means of educating people. These are the types of programmes our viewers enjoy,” he said.

On his part, Ussi said viewers would watch the first episodes of the soap, which was first aired seven years ago. “We are glad to work with Luntha who will air the programme for free,” he said. Ussi further added that Tikuferanji has been a success as several countries among them Tanzania and New Guinea have been coming to ADRA to learn how the programme is done.

Established in 2007 in Balaka, Luntha Television covers parts of the Southern Region, including Mulanje, Chiradzulu, Chikwawa, Blantyre, Blantyre, Zomba, Machinga, Mangochi, Ntcheu, Salima and Dedza.
