Adopt Progressive Media Provisions in the Draft Constitution – MISA

On 12 February, 2009 The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Specialist on Freedom of Expression and Media Law, Sampa kangwa Wilkie made a presentation before the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) Human Rights Committee on the Freedom of Information and the need for the committee to adopt the media provisions as provided in the Mungomba draft constitution.

Wilkie called on the committee to support the adoption of the FOI Article in the draft constitution because it would uplift the socio and economic well-being of the ordinary Zambian citizen and not only the Zambian media.

She said there was need for the FOI because it would enhance the fight against corruption. Wilkie said the African governments need to walk the talk on the issue of Zero tolerance to corruption by enacting legislation that assists to stamp out the vice.

Background  

MISA Zambia and MISA regional office strategically planned lobbying meeting with representatives of the NCC to clarify and persuade the Commissioners in the NCC to adopt the media provisions. MISA was asked to make a presentation to the Human Rights Committee which is discussing the media provisions in the draft constitution. MISA Zambia is also represented by the two members at the NCC.
