Team appointed to fix SABC Crisis

Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda has appointed a team of 12 experts to draw up a strategy that would help turn around the crisis-ridden South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The terms of reference in this regard included, advising on a funding model for the broadcaster's commercial and public broadcasting services.

The team will also help to determine government assistance for the public broadcaster in the immediate and long terms plans, determine its human resources requirements, and employing experienced individuals at the executive and management levels. It will also advise Nyanda on other strategies to ensure the broadcaster achieves its constitutional mandate of independence in a sustainable way. SABC will therefore have to provide all information requested by the team. The team expected to present its report before the end of October 2009.  
 
The team is led by Corporate Governance Lawyer Themba Langa, and comprises of experts in corporate governance, financial, technology management, and human resources.
 
Background

This comes shortly after South African President Jacob Zuma appointed an interim board for the national broadcaster, following the collapse of the board appointed by former  South African President Thabo Mbeki.
