Government Promises To Free Media Space

The Minister of Information Leckford Mwanza assured the media on 10 August 2009 that government intends to free the media space to allow journalists to practice freely. While embarking on a familiarization tour of media houses in Blantyre, the new minister pledged government support to the media, but also urged them to be responsible when executing their duties.

“Use the freedom with responsibility. This is our country, let’s be proud of it,” said Mwanza.

Blantyre Print and Publishing (BP&P) Managing Director Leonard Chikadya briefed the minister and cited huge production costs, especially the costs of newsprint as one of the major problems affecting the newspaper business. He thus called on the government to get investors who could venture into paper milling business.
