According to the government owned Daily News newspaper of 17 December 2009, despite having over 650 registered publications, the survey shows that only 14 percent of respondents preferred newspapers as source of news.
“The poll actually shocked us, although we knew that many people today own sets of television, we didn’t expect that there would be more people preferring television to newspapers”, said Pili Mtambalike, Programme Manager for Media Council of Tanzania (MCT).
Mtambalike revealed that 20 percent of 25,000 plus respondents preferred television.
“We are very satisfied with the number of people who took part in the survey which was in the form of SMS raffle,” she said.
The Journalists of the Year Award is a joint project of several media organizations in the country which include MCT, MISA-Tanzania, Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA), Association of Journalists Against HIV/AIDS in Tanzania (AJAAT), Environment Journalists Association of Tanzania (JET) and others. The project takes the CNN’s African Journalist of the Year Awards mode and seeks to recognize excellence in journalism in the country in the areas of governance, anti-corruption, environment, health, economic, sports and tourism.
Respondents were asked their main source of news among television, radio and newspapers.
