SDA Church Launches Radio Station

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Malawi has gone a step further in its bid to spread the word of God far and wide in the country. In the latest development, the church has officially launched a religious Radio Station at its headquarters in Blantyre. The radio station was launched on 20 September 2009 by the country’s Vice President Joyce Banda who was accompanied by Minister of Information and Civic Education Leckford Thotho.

The radio station started broadcasting on 10 May 2009 last year and has now expanded to the Central Region of Malawi. Speaking at the launch, the Banda pledged government’s willingness to collaborate with the church in spreading the gospel and mitigating further spread of HIV/AIDS through radio programmes. She later donated MK3000, 000 (about US$2143) to the station.

Speaking at the same function, President of SDA Church (Southern Africa Indian Ocean Division) Paul Ratsara asked managers of the radio to uphold the church’s objectives. “Those controlling the radio station should be of good morals; any reckless and immature speeches that may tarnish the church’s image should not be tolerated,” he said.

Malawi has over 5 religious broadcasters among them Radio Maria, Radio Alinafe and Radio Tigabane (Catholic Church), Radio Islam (Islamic community) Trans World Radio, Radio ABC, Channel for All Nations, Calvary Family Church Radio (all belonging to Pentecostal churches). The launching of SDA Radio has brought the total number of radio stations in Malawi (religious, community, private and commercial) to over 22.
