Court reinstates Malawi Broadcasting Corporation staff

Some members of staff have spent their third day at state-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) following a court order issued by the High court on 28 September 2011, which directed that the employees had to go back to their previous workplaces. The reinstated workers were previously redeployed to various government departments and institutions following the merging of MBC Television and radio.

The merger resulted into the redeployment of 150 members of staff, a move which was stopped by the High court of Malawi on grounds that the whole process of merging the two institutions flouted legal procedures as some members of staff were deployed to lower positions which entailed lower salaries.

According to Victor Jere, lawyer representing the affected employees, the court had ruled that the merger should be stopped and that the institution must in the mean time operate separate entities.

According to the court ruling, members of staff who were employed by MBC radio were expected to go back to the radio station, while those that were employed at the television station, were also expected to go back to TVM. //End//
