Call for entries for media awards

The Namibian chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Namibia) on Friday, 2 September 2011 called for entries to its 2011 media awards. The national director of MISA-Namibia, Marbeline Mwashekele, said the organization has taken on board suggestions for improvements from industry players.

This means that for this year’s awards, only accredited and registered journalists, freelance journalists, editors, and broadcasters with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, MISA-Namibia and media institutions are eligible to enter.

Another new feature to the media awards is the introduction of an electronic scoring system executed by Tendayi Ngwerume of the Foundation of Business Technology.
A report by The Namibian indicated that the competition is open to local, regional and national print publications such as newspapers, magazines focusing on news and current affairs issues, and news periodicals published in Namibia. It is also open to private, public and community radio and television broadcasters in Namibia, as well as news agencies inside the country.
There will be a double category for print and broadcast stories featuring gender responsiveness, tourism, environmental, health, best website, and sports.

In the single category for print media, feature stories, business and economic, investigative journalism, best community, feature writer, and grassroots sports will be considered. Stories and photographs eligible are those done from January to December 2010. Submissions must be made between 2 and 30September 2011. The judging process will take place between 30 September to 21 October 2011. The scoring process will be done between 26 October to 1 November 2011, and shortlisted candidates will be announced on 3 November 2011.

The awards gala event will be on 10 November 2011, and the winners will be announced the following day. Only two entries per participant per category are allowed. Entrants may separate articles in any or all categories, but cannot enter the same submission in more than one category. Judges for this year’s media awards are knowledge management expert in the Office of the President Mathew //Gowaseb, National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) marketing manager Michaela Jaeger, senior lecturer at the Polytechnic of Namibia Unomengi Kauapirirua, head of the department of media technology and lecturer at the Polytechnic Bertha Amakali, and media studies lecturer at Unam Robin Tyson.

Three shortlisted candidates will be announced prior to the official awards ceremony. The journalist of the year in broadcast, print and photography will be chosen. //End//
