Media coverage improves

The Zambia Daily Mail released a report on the 20th September 2011 post election media coverage. The report indicated that there is an improvement in the manner in which media in the country is covering various topical issues.

The media monitoring was undertaken between 2nd and 5th November 2011 by Zambian Elections Media Monitoring Project (ZEMMP) and the report was released on 1st December 2011, in Lusaka.
The monitoring was a joint effort by The Media Institute of Southern Africa, Zambia Chapter and the Press Association of Zambia with funding from the United Nations Development Programme.

Nine media houses were sampled and a total of 193 stories analyzed. The nine media houses are Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily mail, The Post, ZNBC Radio, Muvi TV, ZNBC TV, Radio Phoenix, Radio Liseli and Radio Musi-O-Tunya.

According to the report, two thirds of all stories analysed contained information that showed how main topics affect ordinary people. “For the first time in the series of ZEMMP monitoring, pertinent topics such as corruption, economic and business issues featured in the top four main stories,” the report reads in part. The report also states that there has been a change from the election-period monitoring where political parties frequently featured among the top three sources.

The other section of the report states that, “lack of information provided to citizens in stories about different policies which is apparent could be improved by providing more training to improve journalists’ analytical skills and to improve the way they communicate key points of a policy for their audience.”//End//
