MISA elects new advocacy committee members

MISA-Zimbabwe’s National Governing Council (NGC) has completed the constitution of its 10 decentralised Advocacy Committees in Kwekwe, Gweru, Bulawayo, Gwanda, Victoria Falls, Masvingo, Mutare, Marondera, Chinhoyi and Harare.

Elections for the new committee members who will serve three-year terms were held from 19 -29  August 2011 in line with provisions of Section 8.3  of MISA-Zimbabwe’s constitution.
The five-member Advocacy Committees were established in 2008 after MISA-Zimbabwe amended its constitution for purposes of decentralising its media freedom and freedom of expression lobby and advocacy activities in line with its mission and vision statement.

The newly elected members of the Committees will use their constitutionally vested powers to co-opt committee members where positions could not be immediately filled due to MISA-Zimbabwe’s stringent compliance on the need for gender representation in all its organisational structures. This will be the case in Harare, Masvingo and Mutare.

MISA-Zimbabwe Chairperson Njabulo Ncube urged to prioritise activities and campaign programmes that will maintain pressure on demands to free the air waves through comprehensive media reforms.
